FAQs
How long have you played violin?
I have been playing violin for over 30 years! My mom was my first teacher, and I learned to play entirely by ear for the first few years. More formal training began at the School for the Creative and Performing Arts in Lexington, Kentucky. I played in my local youth orchestra and studied Violin Performance at the University of Kentucky. After a few years of teaching and freelancing, I went back to school and earned a degree in Music Education.
What is your teaching philosophy?
The Suzuki Method philosophy resonates with me, the basis being that “every child can”. I have registered Suzuki teacher trainings for Units 1-4, 6, 9 & 10 with additional enrichment trainings.
I work with individual students to discover what motivates them, and I draw on my experiences across the board to help each student and family succeed and grow. As Dr. Suzuki famously said, “character first, ability second.”
Do you prefer teaching or performing?
I founded my teaching and performing business, Weddington String Studio, LLC to bring my love of all things musical under one umbrella.
Working with students in my home studio every week is incredibly rewarding. I feel very lucky to do what I love every day. It’s also a privilege to play music for weddings, events, and all kinds of special occasions.
What styles of music do you play?
I’m classically trained and grew up as a Suzuki kid, but I love lots of different music. In college I was in a salsa band, then a swing band, then a rock band, and all the while I played in orchestras and classical chamber ensembles. I like it all from Bach to Burt Bacharach and beyond!
Before moving away from Kentucky, I performed regularly with the Lexington Chamber Orchestra, The Lex Orchestra, the Lexington Philharmonic, and the Volare String Quartet.
I lived in Charlottesville, Virginia previously and am thrilled to return and get involved in the musical community here!
